NYCC Webinar Series Begins this Tuesday

Submitted by Steve Vaccaro on Sat, 03/28/2020 - 3:54pm

Hello humans!

To maintain camaraderie during these dark days, the club will present virtual webinars, similar to the monthly club meetings with guest speakers, question & answer, and a raffle conducted over the videoconference software Zoom.

The first webinar will be held this Tuesday March 31, at 6:00 p.m.  Guest speakers will be the "War on Cars" podcasters, who will be discussing New York's City's response to the coronavirus lockdown in terms of transportation and public space, as well as the broader implications of the virus for biking and urban life. You can learn more about the War on Cars, and listen to their podcasts, at this link.

Electric Moped Share

Submitted by DWiener on Fri, 03/27/2020 - 4:44pm

I've noticed a bunch of electric mopeds now sitting on the streets of the UWS from some company called Revel. They have licenes plates so I would think they would be operated by a licensed driver, but looks like this will be one more thing we'll have to deal with on our streets, but hopefully not on the bike paths. There are already plenty of similar vehicles being used illegally on the west side greenway

How Greg LeMond Invented Modern Cycling

The next time you put on your cycling shades, clip in to the pedals, ride on your carbon frame, turn on your computer, and pedal in circles- take a second to think about the guy who made modern cycling what it is.

I hope everyone is staying safe and well. I hope to be riding with you again in the near future. I hope you enjoy this read in the meantime.

ENY. YES! Escape New York.

I've always thought that a dumb name for the ride since it ends in...New York. But it does have some cachet now, doesn't it?

So here's my (not serious) logo idea for it this year: A bike whose wheels are that circular corononavirus.

Title is not what you think; completely and totally unlike the youtube video of the same name.

Please be careful and courteous out there!

Social distancing is pushing runners and walkers out into the bike lane in Central Park (and presumably Prospect Park et al). This is a good thing - people are finally being careful - but it creates two new dangers. One, obviously we need to be more careful and slow down if necessary. Two, we need to be more tolerant. On my morning laps today I heard a fellow cyclist snap "Bike lane!" at a runner who was in the middle of "our" lane. Clearly the runner was just properly distancing herself from other runners she wanted to pass, and the a-hole on the bike was trying to pretend that nothing has changed. But things have changed - hopefully just for the next few months - and we have to adapt. Please be more careful and more tolerant out there.

think the following bears consideration, even if we in NY are not required to ride strictly alone.
