Pat's Greenport-Shelter Island-Sag Harbor and back Ride

Submitted by Sir Roger on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 9:40pm

Big thank you to Patrick Mullen and team for laying down the best ride. 5 Stars

A great day enjoyd by I think about 17 riders..We had a cloudy sunny cloudy sunny day.. four ferry rides and about 60 rolling miles. All expertly guided by Pat who has a great knowledge of the local terrain. It really makes one want to get out and explore more of the ends of the Island. The riding was superb .. mainly empty roads and beautiful scenery.

I unreservedly recommend to all club members that they start looking eastward for future rides. And keep an eye out for Patrick Mullen.. who knows mebee we will get another chance to join him on another one of his eastern jaunts

CANCELLED: August 6 Lincoln Tunnel Ride

Submitted by AGarcia on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 4:55pm

With wistful disappointment, sorry to say, tonight's annual ride to the Lincoln Tunnel is CANCELLED. There is forecasted thunderstorm activity between 9PM-11PM, which is not safe for cycling in such weather conditions.

I will personally WALK to the start point with an umbrella to inform people of the cancellation.

There might be a re-scheduled date. We'll wait and see.

Take care and enjoy the rest of the summer weekend.

UPDATE - The ride is cancelled.  70% probability of rain from now through all day tomorrow.  I'm turning off the alarm clock.

PS.  I've scheduled the same ride for August 13.  See the Ride Listings.

NEW MEMBERS RIDE CANCELLED- Sunday, 8/7

Submitted by EJaffe on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 1:34pm

Due to the strong chance of wet roads and intermittent storms, today's ride is cancelled.

BUT, if you were planning on doing it, you must put next Sunday's All-Class Ride on your calendar.

August 14 is shaping up to be a terrific, social day to a lovely beach in Rye, NY.... with a great lunch on the club's dime and swimming optional.

Additional New Member rides to be posted in August and September.

Polar CS600 - cracked mount - my hack!

Submitted by JFeinberg on Fri, 08/05/2011 - 5:49pm

The Polar CS600 connects to a mount via three plastic flanges.  One fine day, I hit a bump and the cs600 took flight.  Upon examination of the device, I discovered that one of these plastic flanges had broken.  The computer will no longer stay reliably connected to the mount.  Unfortunately Polar will not sell me a bottom plate - they want me to send the computer back.  Based on past experience, it would probably take about a month to get it back.  So instead of having no bike computer for a month, I've come up with my own fix (see pictures).

East River Greenway at 75th street - now closed "indefinitely"

Submitted by JFeinberg on Fri, 08/05/2011 - 5:45pm

The east river greenway has been closed at 75th street for about a year now.  If you're heading north, you have to exit at the 71st street bridge, and then head north to 81st street, and then head back to the greenway.  Ugh, at best.

I recently read an article in "Our Town" which mentions that the construction is not done, and the greenway is now closed "indefinitely."  I am guessing it will reopen some time in 2013, based on what I read in the article.

Question from a newbie

Submitted by jforadada on Fri, 08/05/2011 - 1:49pm

Hey everyone! Just joined NYCC and had a questions.  The 'C' rated rides... are those ok for beginners?  My husband and I have only ever done two big organized rides (bike the hudson river valley and the 5 boro bike tour).  We have hybrid bikes and have been wanting to get into bicycling more (to get in shape and for recreation).  Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks and safe riding!
