Saturdays from March 18th until May 20th

We Need Volunteers (so that we can have more riders)! Email Us!!

The B-STS is a weekly series of progressive Saturday rides for dedicated and committed NYCC members. The goal of the series is to increase your riding stamina in a group riding environment, to make new friends and to reacquaint with old friends, and to have fun doing it.

The Basics

The B-STS is reserved for current, dues-paying members of the NYCC. Rides will be held on Saturdays. In the case of inclement weather, we may ride on Sunday. The series will be for 10 weeks.

We are working on a few changes to the registration system, so please bear with us while we complete this. In the meantime read on to learn what we have planned!

● Total capacity for each ride will depend on the leaders who volunteer to be captains. (Note: ride preparation is handled by the coordinator)

● Rides will break up into as many speed groups as we have leaders (and we’d love to hear from you if you want to lead)

● There are no requirements for prior attendance, but you (and your bicycle) ought to be in-shape enough for the rides (or portions of rides) that you attempt! You may be asked to bail from a ride if you have a serious physical or mechanical issue.

Note: You may participate in only one SIG or STS program at a time.

All are welcome to attend the February club meeting to hear more about the B-STS program and meet its leaders.

Safety has always been, and will remain, the primary objective. All B-STS participants should be graduates of the B-SIG or experienced B-level riders; the B-STS is NOT an instructional ride series. Your participation is conditional on your ability to demonstrate safe and steady riding skills. All participants are expected to be proficient in group riding etiquette, to know basic bicycle maintenance, to be familiar with the routes on the rides, and to have a willingness (and responsibility) to take turns pulling during the rides.

What to Expect

For the first ride or two we will ride together at a moderate, steady pace. Eventually our rides will split into several group types depending on how many leaders we have. There will be at least two groups, one targeting 18+ and one targeting 17-18. We are really hoping to have 3-4 groups, but for that we need you (yes, that was another plug for volunteer leaders)

Please make every effort to meet at the appointed starting place and time. There will always be a few brief pre-ride remarks that are important to the success of the ride. The rides will leave on time, so punctuality is very important.  Riders will be notified via email of the start time and place as well as the ride details a few days before the ride.

The determination of which speed group you are in is largely up to you with some suggestions from us. We may suggest you change speed groups during the series, and for this reason we urge you to pick a group you are confident of. Pushing is great, and we encourage that, please be thoughtful in your self classification.

Speaking of group, these will be group rides. That means we ride together. If you decide you’d prefer not to ride with the group please let the leader know.

Our rides will start off moderate (few hills), then gradually progress in mileage, elevation, and degree of difficulty. The B-STS is designed to challenge people who are B riders. These rides will have longer and steeper hills than would be found in the B SIG. Rest stops will be kept to a minimum, in both number of stops and their duration. In lieu of stopping at a diner for a sit down lunch, quick deli stops will be the norm. Please be aware that your commitment to the B-STS is a significant one, and that many of the rides will be all day events.

The Fine Print

These are standard club rides, not a SIG-level training program. We will make a fair effort to accommodate a wide variety of cyclists with different abilities, especially in the beginning. Each participant is expected to be able to keep up, and if necessary, to be able to find his or her way home. Therefore, please be deliberate in pairing with riding partners who fit your style, fitness, and etiquette best. These are not no-drop rides and all participants should be self-sufficient in case a severe mechanical issue or a fitness issue that keeps you from proceeding.

For all B-STS related questions, please send an email to: [email protected].

We’re looking forward to a fantastic B-STS in 2017 and we hope to see you on the road on March 18th!
