Staten Island Conference House loop

Saturday, September 17, 2022 08:40 AM

We are riding the perimeter of Staten Island, going through residential neighborhoods, strip malls, the Arthur Kill Ship Graveyard, Conference House, Battery Weed, Fort Wadsworth and back to the ferry for the trip home.

We will pick up lunch in Tottenville and take it to Conference House Park to eat it and take a break.

Conference House is the 17th century home of Colonel Billop. There is a street named after him or one of his ancestors nearby.

On September 11, 1776, Col. Billop hosted a meeting with Lord Howe, the British commander in New York, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Edward Rutledge to try and find a way to end the American Revolution. They did not succeed at that meeting and the war continued another 6 years before it was ended. Many rides pass by or stop at the DeWint House, in Tappan, where George Washington negotiated the British withdrawal from New York in September 1783.

We will be riding through wetland preserves, passing by Battery Weed in the shadow of the Verrazano Bridge, built in the early 19th century to protect the approaches to New York City and then on to the Staten Island Ferry to get home. The ride officially ends when the  boat docks in Manhattan.

Bring your usual road equipment -- two tubes, a pump or CO2 inflater, road tools -- plenty of water, some pocket food and appropriate clothing for the weather. It's also a good idea to bring a musette bag to carry your lunch from the deli in Tottenville to Conference House Park, about 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile from Tottenville.

This is a no-drop ride and we will adjust our pace as needed to accomodate everyone.

If you change your plans and must withdraw from the ride, please do so on the ride page so someone on the wait list is moved up to your spot and do it before the night before the ride so the person on the wait list has a chance to make their plans for Saturday. It's a courtesy to your fellow members and repeated late dropouts might find themselves barred from future rides.

The No. 1 subway stops right at the Staten Island Ferry bicycle entrance, at the East End of the terminal. The Nos. 4 & 5 stop at Battery Park a short distance from the ferry terminal and several other lines stop nearby.

There are rest rooms at the ferry terminals in Manhattan and St. George and in Conference House Park as well as at a 7-ll/gas station about 40% if the way into the ride.
