Many in our club conflate quantity of miles with quality. This route is short but sweat (sic)—only 35 miles; but don’t be misled by its short distance: it is exceedingly challenigng unless you’re an easy climber.
Up Booth, up Morrow, up Next Day, up Speer, up Churchill, up Leroy-Buckingham, up Walnut, with grades of 10, 12, 14, even 17% in spots.  …With the uphills coming pretty much one right after another.
The leader, a geriatric octagenarian, leads from the rear on all uphills not because he wants to but because he can't ride uphill worth a damn: he suffers from a congenital hill defect which requires his blood doping to climb out of potholes and is daunted by driveways. The point is: You don't have to be strong to come. All you need is: The Will, the Time, and a Low Enough Gear. And the patience to await the belated arrival atop each climb with compassion for the infirm and the elderly.
