Croton Reservoir Triple-Cross

We start at the building with the restrooms just north of the stairs from the 241st street #1 Subway station, get on the South County Rail Trail, switch to the North County trail at Elmsford, lunch at the park in Briarcliff Manor, continue on the trail to the first of 3 bridges crossing parts of the Croton Reservoir, and continue into Croton-on- Hudson. The second bridge, known as "Gatehouse Bridge" goes over the place where the "Old Croton Dam", built in the 1830's was located. The second photo below is the Old Croton Dam, now underwater. In the 1890's the New Croton Dam" was erected (first photo) to increase the size of the reservoir. When completed, in 1906, it was the tallest dam in the world and holds 19 billion gallons of water, some of which we drink every day.

If the group wishes, we will stop for ice cream at the Blue Pig, then continue to the Croton Harmon Metro North train station and head home to Grand Central Station. We have a reservation on the 4:47 PM from Croton Harmon. That is an express train that gets to GCT at 5:47 PM. There are trains every hour so if we have a delay for any reason there are plenty of trains.

This is a no-drop ride. Check your bike for any issues several days before the ride and inflate your tires the day before so that you have time to fix any problems that you discover.

We're not going to be setting speed records. The pace will be a "relaxed 13, depending on temperature, terrain and wind (slower if we have a headwind, faster if there's a tailwind giving us a boost!).

Before You Ride

  • Make sure your bike is in GOOD working order.
  • Pump up tires to the pressure specified on the sidewall.
  • Bring essentials: helmet, 2 spare tubes, pump, patch kit, 2 water bottles, pocket food, ID, and cash (credit optional).
  • Eat a good breakfast consisting of carbohydrates and proteins.

Bicycle helmets are required head attire for all NYCC Club rides.

Earphones are not allowed while riding. Aerobars are not allowed while riding.

If you signed up and find you cannot make the ride, please remove yourself and open the slot for others.
