Sagamore Hill and Caumsett State Park

Saturday, August 20, 2022 07:00 AM

We'll "Escape New York" by hammering the bee-line route from Central Park to Nassau County in the early morning low-traffic hour, then take in some quiet suburban roads and car-free paths on Long Island's storied "Gold Coast," with a fair number of additional car-free miles along the paved Bethpage Bikeway and the Rockaway boardwalk.

Here's the draft Ride with GPS route, which will be ready for download 8 pm the night before the ride.  Not a hilly ride, but not flat, either (39'/mile of ascent). About 3 miles unpaved.

Chris, Jordan and I rode this route for the first time back in March, and we had a blast! Revised route omits "wild" unpaved sections of Caumsett, but still visits the beach on the Sound inside the Park.

Breaks and Return. We'll stop for water/pocket food/comfort every ~25 miles, with one longer break for lunch at Organic Krush (there is a deli across the street if you're not feeling crunchy). Refreshments at the end of the ride at Rockaway Brewing Co., five blocks from the A-train Arverne station, and a mile or so from the Rockaway Ferry station.

Riding Style: We stick to the advertised pace on the windless asphalt flats; exceed it as is safe and appropriate on the descents; reduce pace while climbing, riding unpaved, or facing other resistance while maintaining a  consistent effort; and pause at the top of major climbs to regroup. Pacelining optional.

Bring: Please bring water, pocket food, two spare tubes and air supply, and money for food, trainfare, and emergencies.
