R-STS is a 10-ride series for NYCC B-Riders, running Saturdays March 7 through May 9.
Intended for SIG graduates and comparably experienced cyclists, the R-STS seeks to expand riders' horizons beyond the Piermont-Nyack corridor. The program will feature two events hosted by Long Island Randonneurs: the Jones Beach 100K on 3/28 and the Ronkonkoma 200K on 5/9.
Consistent with its randonneur theme, the series will encourage safety, preparation, navigational skills, knowledge of bikes and gear, efficiency, self reliance, situational awareness and leadership. Social skills always appreciated.
Space is limited to twelve (12) riders. Each participant will be expected to help co-lead two (2) rides.
Riding
We follow B-SIG riding protocols for group riding, but not close formation pacelines. We expect the groups to break out into slower (15-16) and faster (17-18) as well as individuals.
The R-STS does not have a No Drop policy. If you go off the front or back, you're expected to be able to navigate on your own.
Routes
Distances will progress from 45-125 miles and climbing from 30-70' per mile. Some hard pack. Routes will pass through Suffolk, Putnam-Dutchess and Orange Counties in NY and Fairfield-Litchfield in CT. You'll need to obtain a Metro North/Long Island Railroad bike pass.
Gear
A cyclo-cross or touring bike would be ideal. Wider tires (25-32mm). Some storage (handlebar or seatpost). Fenders (permanent or removeable). No aero-bars. Lighting and reflective gear will be required for the Ronkonkoma 200K.
Deep gearing is advised -- particularly if you're a B15-16. Either a triple chainring up front or a mountain cassette in the rear. Better to have and not need, than need and not have.
