Cycling Self Assessment

Choosing the right ride level is one of the most important steps for enjoying NYCC group rides. This self assessment helps cyclists understand which ride pace and distance best match their experience, fitness, and comfort riding in a group.

NOTE: Speed is just one part of the puzzle. The ride speed you fit best with may vary depending on your comfort, safety, bike handling and group riding skills, as well as the leading style of the leader. Nonetheless, many NYCC riders use park laps as a simple way to gauge their cruising speed*.

Our Recommendation

Time yourself over 4 full laps in Central Park (24.4 miles) or 7 full laps in Prospect Park (23.8 miles). Ride at a steady, uninterrupted pace that you can maintain, ideally without traffic lights, stops, or distractions and use your time to estimate your cruising speed. Use the tables below to find your speed range.

* Cruising speed refers to the pace you can consistently hold on flat terrain with no wind or interruptions.
This is not the average speed of a ride, which is generally 3MPH lower than the cruising speed at which it is listed.
