Kids Ride Club

The NYCC has been a been a strong supporter of the Kids Ride Club since its inception in 1996. The goals of the program are to introduce youngsters to cycling as a safe and effective means of transportation and to encourage them through this activity, to incorporate regular physical activity and sound nutrition into their regular lifestyles.

The program consists of a series of structured and supervised bike rides for youngsters aged between 9 and 18 years. The program typically runs between June and October each year. In our L.I. City warehouse we maintain a fleet of more than 60 quality bicycles and supplies for our youth riders. In addition to the bikes, the program provides helmets, support vehicles and supplies to maintain the fleet and enable thet rides. Other sponsors provide funds for incentives consisting of professional grade cycling jerseys, shorts, socks, gloves and caps for the participants and leaders. Most of the ride leaders are NYCC members; many are A, B, and C SIG graduates. Most of the youth riders come from Bushwick, Williamsburg, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Fort Greene, Greenpoint and Long Island City and a few live in other parts of Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx.
Road cycling rides in NYC
Most rides depart from The Kids Ride Club’s Long Island City site at 10:00A.M. on approximately 10 Saturdays from June through September. Occasional rides take place on Sunday. Additional adult and college aged leaders are always welcome to help lead the rides, and supervise the young participants. The early season rides will be short and easy paced (8-15 miles at 9 or 10 mph). In 2026 we welcomed about 25 regular youth riders on each ride. As the season progresses and the kids become more fit and skilled, ride distance and speedwill increase accordingly. Generally, flat cruising speed doesn’t exceed 14 mph.

Adult leaders may volunteer for as many rides as they wish. For volunteering and participating in three rides, kids and adults will receive a free customized cycling jersey and for six rides, a pair of cycling shorts (each worth about $100.00) and after 9 rides, a pair of matching cycling socks. A nice pair of cycling gloves or a very cool cycling cap are available after participating in all the rides.
