A Special Presentation for NYCC by Charles Komanoff

Charles has been a major force in NYC cycling advocacy over the past 25 years.

Here's a sampling of what his efforts have helped accomplish:

  • Spearheaded the revival of Transportation Alternatives as the group's president (1986-92)
  • Edited TA's magazine, "City Cyclist," during that period, turning it into a celebration of and force for cycling
  • Initiated the lawsuit that thwarted Mayor Koch's attempted midtown bicycle ban (1987)
  • Led the campaign that overturned the ban on cyclists from River Road(a/k/a Henry Hudson Drive), 1989-90
  • Ditto, the Port Authority's ban on cycling on the south path of the GWB, 1990-91
  • Edited and curated TA's bike-plan bible, "The Bicycle Blueprint: A Plan To Bring Bicycling into the Mainstream in NYC" (1993)
  • Helped launch "The Street Memorial Project" which stenciled body outlines of over 200 pedestrians and cyclists killed by drivers on NYC streets and sidewalks (1996-2000)
  • Wrote, and led the research that supported, Right Of Way's seminal booklet,"Killed By Automobile" (1999)
  • Published 3 New York Times op-eds, a dozen op-eds in Newsday and the Daily News, and nearly 100 posts on Streetsblog, defending and advocating cyclists' and pedestrians' rights Inspired and tutored cycling advocates in Boston, Toronto, DC, San Francisco, LA, Chicago, Portland, etc.
  • Pioneered quantitative analysis of cycling's "mode share," health benefits and energy-environmental value

Charles is a dedicated commuter and recreational cyclist, logging over 3,000 miles and nearly 300 days on the bike each year -- much of it on routes he learned as an active NYCC member in the 1990s.

His recent history of NYC bike activism, centered on the 1987 fight against the midtown ban but looking forward and back, published in Streetsblog, Aug.-Sept. 2012, is already a classic.
