On Sunday, February 27, the last official day of the installation, Ed White arranged a photo op for NYCC members. Marci Silverman had her ride show up. While people gathered, one of the workers told stories of his experience—16 days outside every day, taking care of art.

It was too cold to stand around for long. Ed got everyone lined up and riding.

Here's Ed leading the group himself. Photo taken by his sister, Jackie.

Note Basil Ashmore with bare arms, no helmet and a mountain bike. Tough guy.

It seemed hard to believe that very shortly The Gates would all disappear. Photo taken by Ed's niece, Christie.

Later in the day, a group of people had a festival of swirling, spinning flags.

It was hard to avoid The Gates. Everywhere you turned, there they were.

However, eventually they came down, one by one.

The bases got stacked and carried away.

The Gates were disassembled north to south. Many gates, some with curtains flipped, remained in the southern part of the park for well over a week.

The crowds of tourists gone, the remaining gates took on a quieter aspect.

The Gates served as a momentary flurry of attention in a city that always moves on.
