April Club Meeting: Fighting For Safer and More Livable Streets

Event: Monthly Club Meeting

Date: April 11, 2017

Location: Connolly’s Bar & Restaurant, 121 West 45th St. (3rd fl.) (bet. 6th Ave. & Broadway)

Program: Fighting For Safer and More Livable Streets: A presentation by Ben Fried, sponsored by Maglia Rosa NYC.

By the standards of large American cities, New York has an enviable bike network, with many miles of greenways and protected bike lanes. But anyone who bikes regularly in New York knows that our safe, low-stress biking streets are still a patchwork, and we have a long way to go before most people are comfortable getting from A to B on a bike. This presentation will look at what’s holding us back from being a truly bike-friendly city, what New York can learn from international peers like London and Berlin, and how we can effectively advocate for better bike infrastructure going forward.

Schedule:

6:00PM - dine, drink and schmooze
7:00PM – program
8:15PM - raffle

Ben Fried is the editor-in-chief of Streetsblog. He joined Streetsblog as a New York City reporter in 2008, covering the push for congestion pricing. Since then he has fended off the bikelash, covered the contentious roll-out of bike-share, and made a nine-year running argument for safer streets in the five boroughs. Today he oversees Streetsblog's family of sites covering stories of significance to the national movement for better walking, biking, and transit. He lives with his wife in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, and he loves the Mets.

Maglia Rosa NYC is a small boutique bicycle shop located at the edge of Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn. We proudly design and sale bespoke bicycles made out of titanium, steel and carbon, we offer a personal and in depth approach to service, professional fitting services, and carry the best crafted accessories and apparel.

While the heyday of the Bar dello Sport may have come and gone, Maglia Rosa aims to recapture that spirit again with a uniquely modern twist. From Flemish pave to Italian switchbacks (and French peaks as well), our café aims to be a hub for adventurous folks to gather, watch, and have polite debates about the sporting events of the day. Whether planning the route over a pre-ride espresso and pastry or relaxing after the effort with a post-ride beer and panino, our café is meant to be a space to reflect and live thoughtfully, if only for the moment…

Note: Although all interested members of the cycling community are cordially invited to attend, only club members will be permitted to participate in our free raffle
