Loooong overdue: blacks in bike racing
Watch for Adrien Niyonshuti in the London Summer Olympics, where he will be riding for Rwanda. Article here:

A few months back, btw, Rwanda rode its first UCI race, the Tour do Rio in Brazil, where they showed themselves to be real competitors, holding a median place in a field of some 80 or so riders. Unfortunately, the event was marred by the ejection of an Italian team for shouting out racist epithets in the peloton and one rider's characterization of some competitors as "monkeys." It's unclear who he meant, especially with the multi-ethnic makeup of the Latin American teams, and, as I'm told, a similar term, "macaco," is a common latino slur for all Brazillians. Whatever the case, sadly, it's all reminiscent of Jackie Robinson's first pro game. As then in baseball, though, there's a beginning here to a great future.
